Winter Breakdown Prevention – 9 Ways To Avoid Getting Stranded In The Cold

Winter is the toughest season for your car. Cold weather drains batteries, reduces tyre pressure, thickens engine oil, and turns windscreen washer fluid to ice. Every year, breakdowns spike by 40% between December and February.

The good news? Most winter breakdowns are preventable. This guide shows you exactly how to prepare your car for winter – and what to do if prevention fails.

Why Do Breakdowns Spike In Winter?

Winter is brutal on cars. Here's what happens when temperatures drop.

ProblemWhat Happens% Increase in Winter
Battery failureCold reduces battery capacity by 30-60%. Old batteries fail.200%
Flat tyresTyre pressure drops 1-2 PSI for every 10°F drop. Under-inflated tyres overheat and fail.50%
Engine oil thickeningCold oil doesn't flow well. Engine works harder.30%
Diesel fuel gellingDiesel can turn to gel in extreme cold.Varies
Frozen windscreen washerFluid freezes. You can't clear your screen.100%
Alternator failureCold temps put extra strain on electrical systems.40%

Every year, breakdown services receive 40% more calls in December, January, and February than in summer months. The good news: Most winter breakdowns are preventable with simple checks.

For more on battery problems specifically, see our flat battery guide.

1 Check Your Battery (The #1 Winter Killer)

Batteries are the number one cause of winter breakdowns. Cold weather reduces battery capacity by 30-60%. If your battery is already weak, winter will kill it.

Checklist for battery health:

  • Get your battery tested – Before winter (Sept-Oct). Free at most garages.
  • Check battery age – If 4+ years old, replace preventatively.
  • Clean battery terminals – Corrosion prevents charging.
  • Check for swelling – Swollen battery = replace immediately.
  • Charge battery fully – Before long trips. Short journeys don't fully charge batteries.

Signs your battery is failing:

  • 🐌 Slow engine crank ("ruh-ruh-ruh" instead of "vroom")
  • 💡 Dim dashboard or headlights
  • 📻 Radio resets or loses stations
  • 🔋 Battery warning light on dashboard
  • 🧊 More than 4-5 years old

If you notice any of these signs, get your battery tested immediately. A £50-100 battery replacement is much cheaper than a breakdown recovery call-out.

For more on battery warning signs, see our signs car battery failing guide.

2 Check Your Tyres

Cold weather reduces tyre pressure. Under-inflated tyres overheat, wear unevenly, and are more likely to blow out. Winter roads are also wetter, icier, and more slippery.

Checklist for winter tyres:

  • Check tyre pressure – Every 2 weeks in winter. Check when tyres are cold.
  • Check tread depth – Minimum 1.6mm (legal). 3mm+ recommended for winter.
  • Check for damage – Cuts, bulges, cracks. Cold makes rubber brittle.
  • Consider winter tyres – If you drive in rural/snowy areas.
  • Check spare tyre – Before winter. Many drivers forget.
Vehicle TypeNormal PressureWinter Pressure (recommended)
Small car (Fiesta, Corsa)30-32 PSI32-34 PSI
Family car (Focus, Golf)32-34 PSI34-36 PSI
SUV (Qashqai, Kuga)33-35 PSI35-37 PSI
Van (Transit, Sprinter)45-55 PSI48-58 PSI

20p test for tread depth: Insert a 20p coin into the tyre tread. If you can't see the outer band of the coin, your tread is above 1.6mm (legal minimum). For winter, aim for 3mm+.

If you get a flat tyre in winter, call us – it's safer than changing it yourself on a cold, dark road.

3 Check Your Antifreeze & Coolant

Antifreeze (coolant) stops your engine from freezing in winter and overheating in summer. If the concentration is too weak, coolant can freeze – causing catastrophic engine damage.

Checklist for antifreeze:

  • Check coolant level – Engine cold. Reservoir should be between min and max marks.
  • Check antifreeze strength – Use a coolant hydrometer (£5-10 from Halfords).
  • Minimum protection – -20°C (most UK winters only need -20°C).
  • Recommended protection – -30°C to -35°C (safe for extreme cold snaps).
  • Replace every 2-3 years – Antifreeze degrades over time.
Mixture (antifreeze:water)Protection down to
25%:75%-10°C (too weak for UK winter)
33%:67%-16°C (minimum acceptable)
50%:50%-35°C (recommended)
66%:33%-50°C (overkill, can reduce cooling)
Warning: If your coolant is brown or rusty, it needs replacing. Milky or oily coolant may indicate head gasket failure – call a garage immediately.

4 Check Your Lights

Winter means fewer daylight hours. You'll use your lights more. One failed bulb can be dangerous – and illegal.

  • Headlights (dipped & main beam) – Check weekly.
  • Rear lights – Check weekly against a wall or reflection.
  • Brake lights – Check weekly (ask someone to help).
  • Indicators – Check weekly while hazards are on.
  • Fog lights – Check monthly.
  • Number plate lights – Check monthly (required by law).

Keep spare bulbs in your car. If you're pulled over for a light fault, you could get a fixed penalty notice (£50-£100). Replace bulbs immediately.

5 Check Your Windscreen & Wipers

Good visibility is critical in winter. Low sun, rain, snow, and road salt all reduce visibility.

  • Replace worn wiper blades – Streaks and chattering mean you can't see properly.
  • Top up washer fluid – Use winter washer fluid (rated to -20°C or lower).
  • Clear ice properly – Use a scraper or de-icer. Never pour hot water on a frozen windscreen (it can crack).
  • Check for chips and cracks – Cold makes cracks worse.
Temperature RatingBest For
-5°CMild winter (south of England) – marginal
-10°CMost of UK – acceptable
-20°C to -30°CRecommended for Northamptonshire and north
-50°C to -70°CExtreme cold (unnecessary for UK)

6 Check Your Heating & Demisting

A working heater is essential for winter – not just for comfort, but for demisting your windscreen.

  • Heater blows hot air – Turn to hot after engine warms up. If cold = possible heater matrix issue.
  • Front demister works – Air should blow onto the windscreen.
  • Rear demister works – Look for the orange lines. They should clear frost/condensation.
  • Air conditioning works – AC dries the air, which demists faster. Run it occasionally in winter.

If your heater isn't working in winter, it's miserable and dangerous (you can't demist the windscreen). Call a garage – or call us for recovery to a garage.

7 Pack A Winter Emergency Kit

Even with perfect preparation, breakdowns can still happen. A winter emergency kit could save your life if you're stranded in the cold.

  • ❄️ Ice scraper & de-icer
  • 📱 Phone charger (cigarette lighter or portable battery)
  • 🦺 High-vis jacket
  • ⚠️ Warning triangle
  • 🔦 Torch
  • 🧣 Blanket or sleeping bag
  • 🧥 Warm jacket, hat, gloves
  • 💧 Bottled water & snacks
  • 🩹 First aid kit
  • 🔋 Jump leads
  • 🛞 Spare tyre in good condition
  • 🪢 Tow rope
Warning: Don't keep items in the car that freeze. Water bottles can freeze and burst – keep them in the passenger compartment, not the boot.

What To Do If You Break Down In Winter

Prevention fails. It happens. Here's what to do if you break down in freezing conditions.

Step 1 – Get to safety

  • Pull over to a hard shoulder, layby, or side of road
  • Hazard lights on immediately
  • Put on your high-vis jacket before getting out

Step 2 – Get out (if safe)

  • Exit passenger side (away from traffic)
  • Get behind the barrier (motorway) or well away from the road
  • Put on your warm jacket, hat, gloves

Step 3 – Stay warm

  • Don't run the engine just for heat (you'll drain the battery)
  • Run the engine for 5 minutes every hour to stay warm (if you're safely off the road)
  • Crack a window slightly (prevents carbon monoxide poisoning if exhaust is blocked by snow)

Step 4 – Call for help

  • If you're on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder, call 999 FIRST
  • If you're safe, call us on 07863 737343
  • Keep your phone charged – use a portable battery if you have one

Step 5 – Wait safely

  • Stay behind the barrier
  • Keep hazard lights on (if battery allows)
  • We send a live tracking link when we dispatch – you'll see exactly where we are
