What To Do If Your Car Breaks Down – A Calm, Step by Step Safety Guide

Your car has just broken down. Your heart is racing. You're not sure what to do.

First: breathe. Second: read this guide. Third: call us when you're safe.

This guide walks you through exactly what to do – whether you're on a motorway, a dark rural lane, a busy A-road, or in a town centre.

No jargon. No panic. Just clear, calm advice. And when you need recovery, Nick answers his own phone. Same price at 3pm or 3am. No Sunday or bank holiday premium. No call-out fee.

No call-out fee. Same price day or night. No Sunday or bank holiday premium.

First – Don't Panic. You've Got This.

Thousands of drivers break down every day in the UK. Most get home safely. You will too.

The most important rule – remember this above everything else:

Your safety comes before your car. Your car can be replaced. You cannot.

Take a breath. Count to ten. Then work through this guide step by step.

Step 1 – Assess Where You Are (First 10 Seconds)

Where you are determines what you should do next. Different locations need different actions.

Where You AreWhat To Do Immediately
Motorway with a hard shoulderPull over as far left as possible. Left exit only. Never stop in a live lane.
Smart motorway (no continuous hard shoulder)Reach an emergency refuge area (orange tarmac, blue sign). If you can't, hazard lights on, stay in your car, call 999 immediately.
A-road or dual carriagewayPull off the road if safe. Use a layby if available. Hard shoulder if no layby.
Rural lane (narrow, no verge, no lights)Pull into a gateway, farm entrance, or passing place if possible. If not, hazard lights on, stay in your car.
Town centre or car parkPull into a parking bay if possible. Hazard lights on.
Residential streetPull over to the side. Avoid blocking driveways if you can.
Tunnel or bridgeKeep moving if possible – these are extremely dangerous places to stop. Reach the end of the tunnel or bridge, then pull over.

If you're unsure where you are: Stay calm. Hazard lights on. Call us. We'll help you figure it out.

Step 2 – Get visible (First 30 seconds)

Make sure other drivers can see you. This could save your life.

  • ✅ Hazard lights on – right now. Even during the day.
  • ✅ High-vis jacket on – keep one in your car for emergencies. Put it on before you get out.
  • ✅ Warning triangle out – place it at least 45 metres (about 50 big steps) behind your car.

Warning triangle rules by location: Motorway hard shoulder → place on the verge. Never walk in a live lane. A-road → place on the verge. Smart motorway (no hard shoulder) → ❌ Do NOT use. Too dangerous.

Sidelights/parking lights on after dark helps visibility. Do NOT use hazard lights as an excuse to park illegally – they don't give you permission.

Step 3 – Get out of the car (if safe)

If you're on a motorway hard shoulder or A-road verge:

  • ✅ Get out on the passenger side (away from traffic)
  • ✅ Get behind the barrier (or well away from the road)
  • ❌ Do NOT stand between your car and the barrier
  • ❌ Do NOT stand in front of your car
  • ❌ Do NOT try to fix anything yourself

If you're on a rural lane with no verge: Stay in your car with seatbelt on. Hazard lights on. Call for help immediately.

If you're on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder and cannot reach an ERA: Do NOT get out of the car. Stay in your car with seatbelt on. Call 999 immediately.

Step 4 – Call for help (Who to call first)

Your SituationWho To Call FirstNumber
Safe on hard shoulder, layby, car park, or residential streetCall your recovery company07863 737343
In a live lane blocking trafficCall 999 (police / Highways England) first, then recovery999
Smart motorway, no hard shoulder, can't reach ERACall 999 first, then recovery999
Injury or medical emergencyCall 999 (ambulance) first, then recovery999
Fire (smoke or flames)Call 999 (fire brigade) first, then recovery999
You don't know what to doCall us – we'll talk you through it07863 737343

What to tell the 999 operator: Which motorway or road you're on, which junction you're near, which direction you're travelling, whether you're in a live lane, hard shoulder, or ERA, any injuries or fire.

What to tell your recovery company: Where you are (road, nearest junction, town, what3words), what happened, where you want the car to go, and what vehicle you have.

Save our number now – before you break down: 07863 737343

Step 5 – Wait safely (What to do while you wait)

DO: Wait behind the barrier, keep hazard lights on, keep high-vis on, keep your phone charged, track our arrival (live tracking link), share your location with family.

DON'T: Accept help from strangers, get back in the car (unless pouring rain on hard shoulder), try to fix it yourself, walk anywhere.

How long will you wait?

Your LocationTypical Arrival Time (from us)
Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough5-15 minutes
Northampton, Rushden15-20 minutes
Daventry, Thrapston15-25 minutes
M1 (J15-J19)25-40 minutes
Rugby, A14 (J1-J13)15-35 minutes

Step 6 – When the recovery driver arrives

DO: Stay behind the barrier until told safe, watch the walkaround video (we film your car before touching it), confirm your destination, ride in the recovery truck cab (not your car), ask questions if unsure.

DON'T: Try to "help", stand near the car while loading.

What is the walkaround video? We film your car before we touch it – every panel, every wheel, every scratch. We send it to your phone. No arguing about damage later.

Step 7 – After you've been recovered (What happens next)

If your car is at a garage: Call the garage, authorise diagnosis, ask for cost estimate, keep your receipt (insurance may cover it).

If your car is at home: Book a mobile mechanic, arrange garage collection, or call us for planned transport (cheaper than emergency).

If you need to claim on insurance: Call your provider, tell them what happened, provide your receipt. We do not give legal advice or handle claims – you deal with your insurer directly.
