πŸš— Breakdown & What To Do

Assess where you are – motorway? A-road? rural lane? Get visible – hazard lights on, high-vis jacket on. Get safe – motorway hard shoulder? exit passenger side, get behind barrier. Call for help – safe? call us. danger? call 999 first. Wait safely – stay behind barrier, keep hazard lights on. For a complete step-by-step guide, see our what to do if your car breaks down page. For a printable checklist, see our emergency breakdown checklist.

Safe on hard shoulder, layby, or car park β†’ Call us (07863 737343). In a live lane or blocking traffic β†’ Call 999 first. Smart motorway, no hard shoulder, can't reach ERA β†’ Call 999 first. Injury or medical emergency β†’ Call 999 first. Fire β†’ Call 999 first. You don't know what to do β†’ Call us – Nick will advise. When in doubt, call 999 first. Their job is to make the scene safe. Our job is to recover your car after it's safe.

On a motorway with a hard shoulder: Yes – exit on the passenger side and get behind the barrier. On a smart motorway with no hard shoulder: No – stay in your car with your seatbelt on, hazard lights on, call 999 immediately. On an A-road or rural lane: It depends – if there's a verge and it's safe to exit, get behind the barrier. If there's no verge, stay in your car. See our emergency breakdown checklist for detailed guidance.
Warning triangles are not required by UK law (unlike France, Germany, Spain, Italy, where they are mandatory). However, you can use one if it's safe: Motorway hard shoulder – yes, place on verge 45 metres behind. A-road – yes, place on verge. Smart motorway with no hard shoulder – NEVER – too dangerous. Emergency refuge area (ERA) – not needed. If you don't have a warning triangle, don't worry. We'll find you without one.
No. Never leave your car on a motorway. Never walk along a motorway. Your car is more visible than you. Stay with your vehicle (or behind the barrier on the hard shoulder). Use your mobile phone to call for help. If you have no signal, use an emergency roadside phone (orange telephone symbol on blue signs).
Yes. We carry jump packs, tyre inflators, coolant, basic tools, and a small amount of fuel. If we can fix it (dead battery jump start Β£65, flat tyre change Β£75, out of fuel Β£65, coolant top-up Β£65, locked keys Β£70), you pay the fixed price and drive away. If we can't, we'll recover you – but we'll tell you the price before we leave. See our roadside assistance page for more details.
If jump starting didn't work, possible causes: battery completely dead (needs replacement), alternator failed, starter motor failed, or major electrical fault. Call us. We'll diagnose and either jump start with our professional equipment (stronger than consumer jump packs) or recover you to a garage for diagnosis and repair. See our flat battery guide for more on battery problems.

πŸ›£οΈ Motorway & Smart Motorway

Smart motorways have emergency refuge areas (ERA) – orange tarmac with a blue sign – every 1.5 miles. If you can reach an ERA: pull in, hazard lights on, stay in your car, use SOS phone or call 999, then call us. If you cannot reach an ERA: hazard lights on, stay in your car with seatbelt on, call 999 immediately. Highways England will close the lane. Do NOT get out of your car. See our motorway breakdown rules UK page for more details.
An ERA is a safe place to stop on a smart motorway when there's no continuous hard shoulder. They are located every 1.5 miles and are marked with: orange tarmac (different colour from the road), blue sign with an orange SOS telephone symbol, emergency telephone (free, direct to Highways England). If you break down, use an ERA if you can reach it safely.
Yes. We can recover you from an ERA. Unlike the hard shoulder, you can stay in your car while you wait (but keep your seatbelt on). Call us on 07863 737343. If you have no mobile signal, use the SOS phone in the ERA (free, direct to Highways England). They will contact us. See our motorway recovery page.
Normal Motorway: has continuous hard shoulder, variable speed limits not enforced by cameras. Smart Motorway: no continuous hard shoulder – only emergency refuge areas (ERA) every 1.5 miles, average speed cameras in roadworks. The M1 near Northampton (J16-J19) and A14 near Kettering are smart motorways.
Do not stop in the tunnel unless absolutely necessary. If you can exit the tunnel, keep moving slowly. If you cannot exit, pull into an emergency refuge area (if available). Stay in your car with seatbelt on. Call 999 (tunnels have special emergency protocols). Do NOT get out of your car. Tunnels have emergency phones, CCTV monitored by control rooms, and fire suppression systems.
