Motorcycle Recovery – Specialist Breakdown & Towing For Bikes (With Proper Equipment)

Your bike is your passion. Commuter, tourer, sports bike, classic – you've invested time, money, and love.

When it breaks down, you want someone who understands motorcycles. Not a car recovery driver guessing where to strap a bike. We use specialist equipment: front wheel chock, soft straps, upright transport. No damage to fairings, paint, or chrome. Same price at 3pm or 3am. No Sunday premium. This guide explains how motorcycle recovery works, what equipment we use, and what you need to do if you break down.

No call-out fee. Specialist equipment included. Same price day or night.

What Is Motorcycle Recovery? (Simple Definition)

Motorcycle recovery is the specialised service of recovering broken-down, accident-damaged, or non-running motorcycles using bike-specific equipment – front wheel chocks, soft straps, and upright transport.

Why motorcycles need specialist recovery: Bikes tip over (they don't stand up on their own like cars). Fairings are fragile (plastic bodywork cracks easily). Paint and chrome scratch (metal straps damage expensive finishes). Wheels turn differently (front wheel must be secured, not just strapped). Bikes are narrow (standard car recovery methods don't work).

When you need motorcycle recovery: Bike won't start (dead battery, starter motor, electrical fault), engine failure, accident damage, flat tyre, out of fuel, electrical fault.

What motorcycle recovery is NOT: NOT a mobile mechanic service (we can do basic fixes – jump start – but major repairs need a garage). NOT a courier service (we recover the bike, not just collect it). NOT HGV recovery (we only do motorcycles and cars/vans up to 3.5 tonnes). For car recovery, see our car recovery service page.

Motorcycle Recovery vs Car Recovery – What's The Difference?

FeatureCar RecoveryMotorcycle Recovery
Loading methodDrive or winch onto flatbedWinch onto flatbed into a front wheel chock
Wheel chockNot needed (car stands on its own wheels)✅ Essential – holds the front wheel straight
StrapsHeavy-duty ratchet straps on wheelsSoft straps (fabric, not metal) over the seat/frame – never on fairings
Bike positionN/A (car lies flat on its wheels)Upright (bike must stay vertical – never laid on its side)
Risk of damageLow (tyres, bodywork)High (fairings, paint, chrome, mirrors, indicators)
Loading time5-10 minutes10-20 minutes (more careful, more straps)
Customer stressModerate (annoying)High (you love your bike – we understand)
Typical cost£60-150£65-160 (similar – equipment cost is similar)

We treat your bike like our own. No shortcuts. No damage.

Our Specialist Motorcycle Recovery Equipment

Front wheel chock – Holds the front wheel straight and upright. Without a chock, the bike can tip over during transport. Essential.

Soft straps (fabric) – Secure the bike without scratching fairings or paint. Metal hooks or chains will scratch your bike. We use padded fabric straps.

Flatbed with low angle – Easy winching without scraping the underside. Sports bikes have low ground clearance. Standard flatbed angle can scrape.

Multiple tie-down points – Secure the bike from multiple angles (front, rear, sides). One strap isn't enough. We use 4-6 straps to keep the bike rock solid.

Winch with soft hook cover – Prevent damage to wheels or forks when winching. Metal winch hooks can scratch wheels. We use rubber-coated or fabric-covered hooks.

Rear wheel straps – Stop the rear wheel from sliding sideways. Bikes can fishtail without rear wheel securement.

We have the right equipment. Your bike is safe with us.

Accident Recovery For Motorcycles (Special Considerations)

Accident Damage TypeRecovery MethodSpecial Considerations
Fairings cracked or brokenSoft straps over frame (not over fairings). If frame inaccessible, may need specialist lifting straps. We will NOT strap over cracked fairings – they will break further.
Forks bent or damagedWinch carefully – bent forks don't roll straight. May need front wheel dolly.Extra time (15-30 minutes). We have the equipment.
Wheels damagedWheel skates (dollies) under damaged wheels. Bike may need to be lifted off ground. We have wheel skates for bikes. Extra time.
Frame damageLoad very carefully – bike may be structurally compromised. May need lifting, not winching.Call us – we may need a second technician.
Leaking fluids (oil, fuel)Absorbent mats under bike. Will NOT recover with major fuel leak (fire risk). Fire brigade first.Safety first.
Rider injuredWill NOT load bike until paramedics have attended to you.Your health is more important than the bike. We'll wait.
⚠️ What we DO NOT do in accident recovery: No legal advice (we are not lawyers). No insurance claims handling (you deal with your insurer). No police investigation.

✅ What we DO: Recover your bike safely. Store it securely if needed (secure yard, CCTV). Provide a detailed receipt for your insurance.

What To Do If Your Motorcycle Breaks Down (Rider Safety)

🏍️ Step 1 – Get to safety: Pull over to hard shoulder (motorway) or side of road. Get off the bike – stand on passenger side (away from traffic). Get behind the barrier if there is one.

🦺 Step 2 – Get visible: High-vis jacket on (keep one under your seat). Hazard lights on (if your bike has them). Leave your helmet on (protects your head – you're still on a roadside).

📞 Step 3 – Call for help: If you're in danger or in a live lane – call 999 first. If you're safe – call us on 07863 737343.

🏍️ Step 4 – Stay with your bike: Do NOT walk along the motorway or A-road to find help. Your bike is more visible than you. Keep your helmet and gloves on.
❌ What NOT to do on a motorcycle breakdown:
• Do NOT stand in between your bike and the barrier (if hit, you'll be crushed)
• Do NOT try to push your bike to safety (too heavy, too dangerous)
• Do NOT accept help from strangers pulling over (they mean well, but it causes more danger)

We will find you. Stay safe. Call us.
