This guide explains how motorcycle recovery works, what equipment we use, and what you need to do if you break down.
Motorcycle recovery is the specialised service of recovering broken-down, accident-damaged, or non-running motorcycles using bike-specific equipment – front wheel chocks, soft straps, and upright transport.
Why motorcycles need specialist recovery: Bikes tip over (they don't stand up on their own like cars). Fairings are fragile (plastic bodywork cracks easily). Paint and chrome scratch (metal straps damage expensive finishes). Wheels turn differently (front wheel must be secured, not just strapped). Bikes are narrow (standard car recovery methods don't work).
When you need motorcycle recovery: Bike won't start (dead battery, starter motor, electrical fault), engine failure, accident damage, flat tyre, out of fuel, electrical fault.
What motorcycle recovery is NOT: NOT a mobile mechanic service (we can do basic fixes – jump start – but major repairs need a garage). Front wheel chock – Holds the front wheel straight and upright. Without a chock, the bike can tip over during transport. Essential.
Soft straps (fabric) – Secure the bike without scratching fairings or paint. Metal hooks or chains will scratch your bike. We use padded fabric straps.
Flatbed with low angle – Easy winching without scraping the underside. Sports bikes have low ground clearance. Standard flatbed angle can scrape.
Multiple tie-down points – Secure the bike from multiple angles (front, rear, sides). One strap isn't enough. We use 4-6 straps to keep the bike rock solid.
Winch with soft hook cover – Prevent damage to wheels or forks when winching. Metal winch hooks can scratch wheels. We use rubber-coated or fabric-covered hooks.
Rear wheel straps – Stop the rear wheel from sliding sideways. Bikes can fishtail without rear wheel securement.
