But what actually happens when you call? What types of recovery trucks are there? And when should you call instead of trying to fix it yourself? Car recovery is the service of transporting a broken-down, damaged, or non-running vehicle from its current location to a place of safety – usually your home, a garage, or a secure depot.
When do you need car recovery? Your car won't start (dead battery, starter motor failure, electrical fault), engine has failed (cambelt snapped, overheating), accident damage, flat tyre with no spare, ran out of fuel, or petrol in a diesel.
What car recovery is NOT: NOT a mobile mechanic service (we generally don't do repairs at the roadside – but we may try minor fixes like jump starts or tyre inflations). NOT a legal or insurance advice service. NOT an emergency service (if you're in danger, call 999 first).
The goal: Get you and your vehicle to safety as quickly and safely as possible.
Not all recovery trucks are the same. Here are the main types you'll see on UK roads – and what each is best for.
How it works: The bed tilts down to ground level. The car is winched onto the bed. The bed raises back to horizontal. The car is strapped down.
Best for: Most cars, SUVs, vans, motorcycles, classic cars.
Advantages: Car is completely off the ground. No wear on tyres. Safest method. No damage to transmission on automatic cars (wheels don't turn).
How it works: A metal yoke lifts the front or rear wheels off the ground. The other wheels stay on the road.
Disadvantages: We don't use this method. Can damage car (bumper, suspension, transmission on automatic cars). Unsafe for long distances.
Best for: Low sports cars (Porsche, Lotus), classic cars with fragile undertrays, very large SUVs with low clearance.
Advantages: Won't scrape the front bumper, undertray, or splitter.
How it works: Motorcycle is strapped upright into a front wheel chock on a flatbed or dedicated bike trailer.
Our limit: 3.5 tonnes (standard car, large SUV, van). We don't recover HGVs or buses. For HGVs, call a specialist HGV recovery company.
Sometimes you can fix a problem yourself. Sometimes you should call a professional. Here's how to decide.
Call recovery immediately (do NOT try to fix it yourself) if: You're on a motorway or A-road hard shoulder, the car is smoking or steaming, you've had an accident, you're not confident, dark rural road with no lights, or you're blocking traffic.
Try to fix it yourself (if safe and you're confident) if: Dead battery (jump start), flat tyre with spare (safe location, not motorway), out of fuel (walk to station if safe), overheated engine (let cool, top up coolant), loose battery terminal (tighten with spanner).
Our advice: If you're in any doubt, call us. A recovery call-out is cheaper than an accident or a blown engine.

We can recover: Cars (all makes and models), SUVs (Qashqai, Kuga, XC90, etc.), large SUVs (Range Rover, Q7, X5 – low loader recommended), vans up to 3.5 tonnes (Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro), motorcycles (any size), classic cars (extra care, soft straps), electric vehicles (EVs – flatbed only), performance cars (Porsche, Lotus, Ferrari – low loader only), people carriers (Zafira, Galaxy), minibuses up to 8 seats.
We cannot recover: HGVs (lorries over 3.5 tonnes), buses, agricultural vehicles (tractors, combines), plant equipment (diggers, dumpers). For HGVs or buses, call a specialist recovery service.
What to look for: No call-out fee, same price day or night, transparent pricing (price before they leave), live tracking link, video walkaround before loading, real Google reviews, local knowledge, fully insured (public liability + goods in transit).
What to avoid: Companies that won't give a price over the phone, prices that seem too good to be true, no call-out fee but very high per-mile rates, no mention of insurance, generic website with no local address or phone number.
