You're at the roadside. Your car won't start. Do you need roadside assistance or breakdown recovery?
Roadside assistance is for problems that can be fixed on the spot – jump starts, flat tyres, out of fuel. Breakdown recovery is for when the car needs to be towed. This guide explains what roadside assistance covers, what it doesn't, and how to know which service you need. And when you need help in Northamptonshire, we're here.
Roadside assistance is a service that helps drivers with minor breakdowns that can be fixed at the roadside – without towing the vehicle.
Common roadside assistance fixes: 🔋 Jump start (dead battery from lights left on, cold weather, old battery). 🛞 Flat tyre – help changing to the spare tyre (or inflating a slow puncture). ⛽ Out of fuel – delivering a small amount of fuel to get you to the nearest petrol station. 🔑 Locked keys – helping you get back into your car. 🔌 Minor electrical fault – loose battery terminal, blown fuse (if easy to access). ❄️ Overheating – topping up coolant (if safe and you have coolant).
What roadside assistance is NOT: NOT a full mechanical repair service (we won't rebuild your engine at the roadside). NOT for major breakdowns (engine failure, cambelt snapped, accident damage). NOT a replacement for regular car maintenance. NOT an emergency service (if you're in danger, call 999 first).
The goal: Get you back on the road as quickly as possible. If we can't fix it in 15-20 minutes, we'll recommend recovery instead.
| Feature | Roadside Assistance | Breakdown Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | A technician tries to fix the problem on the spot. | Your car is taken away on a flatbed truck. |
| When it's used | Minor problems: dead battery, flat tyre, out of fuel, minor electrical fault. | Major problems: engine failure, accident damage, broken cambelt, car won't start after attempted fix. |
| Goal | Get you driving again within 15-45 minutes. | Get you and your car to safety. |
| Typical outcome | You drive away (if fix works). | Your car is delivered to a garage or your home. |
| Cost | Lower (if fix works – you avoid towing fees). | Higher (towing distance + safety fees). |
The flow is usually: Call for roadside assistance → we'll try to fix it on the spot → If we can't fix it in 15-20 minutes → we'll recommend recovery instead. In practice, we do both. See our breakdown recovery page for when the car needs to be towed.
Problems We CAN Fix (Usually 15-20 minutes):
| Problem | How We Fix It | Success Rate | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dead battery (flat) | Jump start with professional jump pack | 95% (if battery is just flat, not dead) | 5-10 minutes |
| Flat tyre (with spare) | Help you change to the spare tyre (or change it for you) | 100% (if you have a spare and it's inflated) | 10-15 minutes |
| Out of fuel | Deliver 5-10 litres of fuel to get you to nearest petrol station | 100% (if not on motorway) | 10-15 minutes |
| Locked keys in car | Use tools to unlock the door (without damaging the car) | 90% (some cars are harder) | 5-15 minutes |
| Loose battery terminal | Tighten with a spanner (10mm usually) | 100% (if that's the only problem) | 2-5 minutes |
| Blown fuse (easy access) | Replace with spare fuse (if we have one and accessible) | 70% (depends on fuse location) | 5-10 minutes |
| Overheating (coolant) | Top up coolant (if safe and you have it) | Temporary fix – may need garage | 5-10 minutes |
Problems We CANNOT Fix (Need Recovery Instead): Engine failure (cambelt snapped, seized engine), transmission failure, accident damage, completely dead battery (won't hold charge), flat tyre with no spare, broken starter motor, broken alternator, major electrical fault. See our breakdown recovery page for these situations.
Jump starting is the most common roadside assistance call-out. Here's how to do it safely – and when to call a professional.
If you want to try it yourself (safe conditions only): Position working car close (not touching) → both cars OFF, handbrakes on → red cable to dead battery positive (+) → red cable to working battery positive (+) → black cable to working battery negative (-) → black cable to bare metal on dead car (NOT the battery terminal – spark risk) → start working car, run 2-3 minutes → start dead car → remove cables in reverse order → drive 20-30 minutes to recharge.
We carry professional jump packs that work without another car. Call us on 07863 737343. For more battery guidance, see our flat battery guide.
If you want to try it yourself (safe conditions only): Find a safe, flat, hard surface (not on a motorway hard shoulder) → Park/Handbrake on → warning triangle 45 metres behind → loosen wheel nuts slightly (while car on ground) → jack up → remove nuts & flat tyre → fit spare → hand-tighten nuts → lower car → tighten fully (star pattern).
We can change your tyre for you if it's safe to do so. If you have no spare (or run-flat tyres), we may need to recover you to a tyre shop.
Running out of fuel is embarrassing but common. Pull over to a safe location → hazard lights on → high-vis jacket on (if dark) → call us. We can deliver fuel (5-10 litres) to get you to the nearest petrol station (£50-90). If you're on a motorway, we may recommend recovery instead (safety).
Locking your keys in the car happens to everyone at least once. Check if any door is unlocked (it happens) → check the boot → call us – we have tools to unlock most cars without damaging them (£50-100). We cannot cut new keys or reprogram electronic keys (call a mobile locksmith or dealer for that).
Typical UK cost ranges (pay-as-you-go, not membership): Jump start: £40-70. Flat tyre change (to spare): £40-80. Out of fuel (fuel delivery): £50-90. Locked keys: £50-100. Basic electrical fix: £40-80. Coolant top-up: £40-70.
What affects cost: Location – motorway call-outs cost more (safety fee). Time of day – many companies charge extra at night (find one that doesn't). Day of week – Sunday premiums are common (find one that doesn't). Call-out fee – some companies charge £30-60 just to come out (find one that doesn't).
Membership vs pay-as-you-go: Membership (AA, RAC, Green Flag) – annual cost £50-250/year, cost per call-out £0-30 excess, best for frequent breakdowns (2+ per year). Pay-as-you-go (like us) – £0 membership, £40-90 per call-out, best for rare breakdowns (once every few years).
For detailed pricing, see our car recovery cost guide and breakdown recovery cost UK guide.
What to look for: No call-out fee, same price day or night, transparent pricing, live tracking link, video walkaround (if recovery needed), real Google reviews, local knowledge, fully insured, fast response time (local: 5-30 minutes).
What to avoid: Companies that won't give a price over the phone, prices that seem too good to be true, no mention of insurance, generic website with no local address or phone number.
Thousands of drivers helped. Same process every time. Safe, professional, transparent.
