Motorway Recovery – What It Is, How It Works, And What To Do When You Break Down

This guide explains what motorway recovery is, how it works, what happens when you call, and what YOU need to do to stay safe. No jargon. Just clear, accurate information. And when you need motorway recovery in Northamptonshire, we're here.

Motorway safety fee disclosed upfront. No hidden charges. Same price day or night.

What Is Motorway Recovery? (Simple Definition)

Motorway recovery is the specialised service of recovering broken-down or accident-damaged vehicles from motorways (M1, M6, M25, M40, M62, M5, etc.).

Why motorway recovery is different: Higher speeds (70mph+), consistently high traffic volume, hard shoulder (older motorways) vs smart motorways (no continuous hard shoulder), emergency refuge areas every 1.5 miles on smart motorways, and common emergency services involvement.

The goal of motorway recovery: Get you and your vehicle to safety as quickly and safely as possible. For specific motorway information, see our motorway breakdown help page.

Smart Motorway Recovery – Special Rules

Smart motorways have no continuous hard shoulder. Only emergency refuge areas (ERA) every 1.5 miles.

What is an emergency refuge area (ERA)? Orange tarmac, blue sign with orange SOS telephone symbol, emergency telephone (free, direct to Highways England).

If you break down on a smart motorway: Can you reach an ERA? → Pull in, hazard lights on, stay in your car, use SOS phone or call 999, then call us. Cannot reach an ERA (stuck in live lane)? → Hazard lights on, do NOT get out, stay in your car, call 999 immediately. Highways England will close the lane. Do NOT get out until lane is closed or you're told it's safe. Then call us.

We CAN recover from emergency refuge areas. It's safer than the hard shoulder. For more on smart motorway rules, see our motorway breakdown rules UK page.

Motorway Recovery Safety Protocols (What We Do)

Our safety equipment: Matrix boards (electronic "slow" or "caution" signs mounted on truck), cones, high-vis jackets, emergency corridor awareness, live tracking.

Our safety procedures: We park behind your car (creates safety buffer), use matrix boards to warn traffic, ask you to stay behind the barrier, do NOT attempt repairs on hard shoulder (tow to services instead), coordinate with police/Highways England if needed. Your safety is our priority.

999 vs Recovery – Which Number Should You Call First On A Motorway?

Call 999 FIRST if: You're in a live lane (any lane), on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder and cannot reach an ERA, your car is blocking the carriageway, anyone is injured, there's fire or smoke, other driver has fled (hit and run), or you're in danger and don't know what to do.

⚠️ When in doubt, call 999 first. Their job is to make the scene safe. Our job is to recover your car AFTER it's safe.

Call us (07863 737343) FIRST if: You're safely on the hard shoulder, safely in an emergency refuge area (ERA), at a motorway service area, or you've already called 999 and the lane is closed.

What NOT To Do On A Motorway (Seriously Dangerous)

❌ These mistakes kill people every year. Do NOT do them:
• Stopping in a live lane – Lorries don't stop quickly. You will be hit. Keep moving if possible. Reach hard shoulder or ERA. Call 999 if you can't.
• Sitting in your car on the hard shoulder – Other drivers drift onto the hard shoulder. Exit passenger side. Get behind the barrier.
• Standing between your car and the barrier – If your car is hit from behind, you will be crushed. Exit passenger side. Get behind the barrier.
• Walking along the motorway – Drivers don't expect pedestrians. Stay with your car. Call for help.
• Trying to fix your car on the hard shoulder – Changing a tyre on the hard shoulder is how people die. Call us. We'll tow you to the next services.
• Crossing the motorway on foot – 70mph traffic in both directions. Never cross a motorway on foot.
• Putting out a warning triangle on a smart motorway – No hard shoulder. Do NOT use warning triangles on smart motorways.

Your car can be replaced. You cannot.
