Smart Motorway on M1 – What You MUST Know

Between Junction 16 and Junction 19 (Northampton to Rugby), the M1 is a smart motorway with no continuous hard shoulder. Only emergency refuge areas (ERA) every 1.5 miles.

If you can reach an ERA: Pull in. Orange tarmac. Blue sign. Hazard lights on. Stay in your car. Use SOS phone or call 999. Then call us.

If you cannot reach an ERA: Do NOT stop in a live lane unless absolutely necessary. Hazard lights on. Stay in car. Call 999 immediately.

How much does M1 breakdown assistance cost?

How fast can you reach me on the M1?

From our Corby depot to J15 (Northampton) is 25-30 minutes. To J19 (Catthorpe) is 35-40 minutes. BUT – if Highways England needs to close a lane, we cannot reach you until they arrive. That's not us being slow. That's safety protocol.

I'm on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder. What do I do?

Reach an emergency refuge area if possible (orange tarmac, blue sign). If not, hazard lights on, stay in your car, call 999 immediately. Highways England will close a lane. Then call us.

Can you help if my car has broken down in a live lane?

We cannot help until Highways England closes the lane. Call 999 first. Once the lane is closed and it's safe, call us. We'll come as fast as we can.

I have a van broken down on the M1. Do you do van recovery?

I've had an accident on the M1. Do you help with insurance?
