Legal Sources – Where Do These Rules Come From?

We are not lawyers. This guide interprets these sources in plain English. For official legal advice, consult the original documents or a solicitor.

Rule 1 – Where You Can (And Can't) Stop on a Motorway

Hard shoulder: ✅ legal (emergency only). Live lane: ❌ illegal (dangerous). Smart motorway without ERA: ❌ illegal. Penalties: fine up to £100 and 3 points.

Rule 2 – Hard Shoulder Rules

Pull over left, hazard lights on, exit passenger side, get behind barrier, do NOT stand between car and barrier. Call 999 if danger, otherwise call us.

Rule 3 – Smart Motorway Rules (No Hard Shoulder)

Reach ERA if possible. If stuck in live lane: stay in car, hazard lights on, call 999 immediately. Never get out.

Rule 4 – Warning Triangles (Legal or Not?)

Not required by UK law. Permitted on hard shoulder (place 45m behind). Never use on smart motorway without hard shoulder.
