What this guide is: A plain-English explanation of UK motorway breakdown rules based on the Highway Code and UK traffic laws. Practical advice to help you stay safe and legal.
What this guide is NOT: Official legal advice. We are not lawyers. This is not a substitute for reading the Highway Code (gov.uk/highway-code). If you're in danger now, call 999 immediately.
| Rule | What You MUST Do |
|---|---|
| Stop on hard shoulder (if available) | Pull over as far left as possible. Left exit only. |
| Smart motorway (no hard shoulder) | Reach an emergency refuge area (orange tarmac, blue sign). If you can’t, stay in your car, hazard lights on, call 999. |
| Hazard lights | Must be on immediately. |
| High-vis jacket | Highly recommended (not legally required but potentially life-saving). |
| Behind the barrier | Get behind the safety barrier if possible. |
| Warning triangle | Permitted but not required by UK law. Never use on smart motorway with no hard shoulder. |
| Call 999 | Required if you're in a live lane, blocking traffic, or on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder. |
| Call recovery | Once safe, call us on 07863 737343. |
| Do NOT | Stand between car and barrier. Walk on motorway. Attempt repairs. Cross the carriageway. |
