Smart Motorway on A14 – What You MUST Do If You Break Down

The A14 between Catthorpe (J1) and Thrapston (J13) has sections with no continuous hard shoulder. Only emergency refuge areas (ERAs) every 1.5 miles.

  • If you can reach an emergency refuge area: Pull in. Call emergency services or your recovery provider. Stay in your vehicle with seatbelt fastened. Use the SOS phone if you have no mobile signal.
  • If you cannot reach a refuge area: Put hazard lights on immediately. Call 999 (Highways England) first – they may need to close a lane. Then call your recovery provider.
  • Do not get out of the vehicle unless you are in immediate danger and can safely reach behind the barrier.
  • Do not attempt to cross live lanes to reach an ERA on the opposite side.

Recovery providers cannot close lanes. Highways England may need to attend first on smart motorway sections before recovery can begin.
