After 8+ years recovering vehicles from the A14, we know exactly why drivers break down here.
Why: 50mph average speed cameras in roadworks (J1-J13). Cars overheat at constant low speed.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge high. Steam from bonnet. Burning smell.
What to do: If safe, pull into ERA. Let engine cool. Call us. Do NOT open coolant cap while hot.
Why: HGV tyre debris on carriageway. Lorries to Felixstowe port shed retreaded tyre chunks.
Symptoms: Loud bang. Car pulls to one side. Vibration. Steering feels strange.
What to do: Do NOT brake hard. Slow gently. Pull into ERA if possible. Call us. Do NOT change tyre on A14 – too dangerous.
Why: Long gaps between services. "I'll make it to the next one." You don't.

The A14 has 50mph average speed cameras through roadworks (J1-J13). This causes overheating.
Why 50mph zones cause overheating: Constant speed = less airflow through radiator. Engine works at steady load without cooling breaks. Older cars, cars with coolant leaks, or cars with small radiators overheat.
How to prevent overheating on the A14:
If you overheat on the A14, call us. See our A14 breakdown recovery page.
