Common Breakdown Causes On The A14

After 8+ years recovering vehicles from the A14, we know exactly why drivers break down here.

Cause #1 – Overheating (Very Common)

Why: 50mph average speed cameras in roadworks (J1-J13). Cars overheat at constant low speed.

Symptoms: Temperature gauge high. Steam from bonnet. Burning smell.

What to do: If safe, pull into ERA. Let engine cool. Call us. Do NOT open coolant cap while hot.

Cause #2 – Tyre Blowouts (Common)

Why: HGV tyre debris on carriageway. Lorries to Felixstowe port shed retreaded tyre chunks.

Symptoms: Loud bang. Car pulls to one side. Vibration. Steering feels strange.

What to do: Do NOT brake hard. Slow gently. Pull into ERA if possible. Call us. Do NOT change tyre on A14 – too dangerous.

Cause #3 – Out Of Fuel (Common)

Why: Long gaps between services. "I'll make it to the next one." You don't.

Symptoms: Engine stutters. Loss of power. Car stops.

What to do: Pull into ERA if possible. Call us. We can bring fuel or recover you.

Cause #4 – Mobile Signal Black Spots (Frustrating)

Why: No phone signal between J3 (Crick) and J7 (Kettering).

Symptoms: No signal bars. Can't call for help.

What to do: Walk 200m towards Crick or Kettering. Signal returns. Call us. Do NOT walk on carriageway – use the verge.

Cause #5 – Deer Strikes (Common at Dusk/Dawn)

Why: Deer cross the A14 between J1 and J7 (rural sections). Especially common near Crick and Kilsby.

Symptoms: Deer runs into road. Collision. Car damaged.

What to do: Pull into ERA if possible. Call 999 if deer is injured and blocking the road. Call your insurance. Call us for recovery. Do NOT approach the deer.

If you break down on the A14 for any reason, call us on 07863 737343. We've seen it all.

Step By Step – What To Do If You Break Down On The A14

Follow these steps in order. Your safety is the priority.

  • 1 Try to reach an emergency refuge area (ERA) – Look for orange tarmac and blue signs (every 1.5 miles). If you can coast or drive slowly, get to the next ERA.
  • 2 If you can't reach an ERA – Call 999 immediately. Stay in your car with seatbelt on. Hazard lights on. Do NOT get out of your car.
  • 3 If you're in an ERA – Hazard lights on. Stay in your car. Use the SOS telephone or call 999 if you have signal. Then call us on 07863 737343.
  • 4 If you have no mobile signal (J3-J7 black spot) – Walk 200m towards Crick or Kettering – signal returns. Call us. Do NOT walk on the carriageway – use the verge.
  • 5 Call us – 07863 737343. Tell us which junction you're near. If you don't know, describe the last sign you saw. We'll dispatch a motorway recovery truck with matrix boards and cones.

The A14 passes through rural areas between J1 and J7. Deer cross the road – especially at dusk and dawn.

Deer danger zones on the A14: J1 to J3 (Catthorpe to Crick) – High, J3 to J4 (Crick to Lilbourne) – High, J4 to J5 (Lilbourne to Rugby turn-off) – Medium, J5 to J6 (Rugby turn-off) – Medium, J6 to J7 (Rugby to Kettering) – Medium. Peak times: Dusk (5-7pm), dawn (5-7am).

What to do if you see a deer on the A14:

  • 🦌 Slow down – don't swerve suddenly (you could hit another car)
  • 🚨 Flash your lights to warn other drivers

A14 Average Speed Cameras – Watch Your Temperature

The A14 has 50mph average speed cameras through roadworks (J1-J13). This causes overheating.

Why 50mph zones cause overheating: Constant speed = less airflow through radiator. Engine works at steady load without cooling breaks. Older cars, cars with coolant leaks, or cars with small radiators overheat.

How to prevent overheating on the A14:

  • ✅ Check coolant level before long journeys
  • ✅ Watch your temperature gauge
  • ✅ If temperature rises, turn off air conditioning (reduces engine load)
  • ✅ If temperature is very high, pull into an ERA and let the engine cool

If you overheat on the A14, call us. See our A14 breakdown recovery page.
